Hagop Haig Armaghanian
Passed away on 17 August 2019, aged 91 years.
Obituary: Hagop Haig Armaghanian (1927-2019)
It is with great sadness that we announce that Hagop H. Armaghanian
passed away on August 17th, 2019 at the Royal Berkshire Hospital, Reading,
England. Hagop H. Armaghanian is survived by his wife, Vanouhi, his daughter
Tania and her husband Yervant, their son Gregory, and his son Haig and his wife
Arsineh, and their daughters Emily and Ella. He was 91 years old.
Funeral Service was held at 1pm, 5th September, at Henley Road
Cemetery in Reading, England.
Hagop was born in Nicosia, Cyprus on Christmas Eve, 1927. He went to
the English School in Nicosia and was fluent in reading and writing four
languages - Armenian, Greek, Turkish and English. He worked on the editorial
team at the FBIS (Foreign Broadcasting Information Service) in Kyrenia. Hagop
was also Cyprus' Scout Inspector. This role led Hagop to fly to England from
Cyprus, on Saint George's Day, and he had the honour of shaking the hand of the
now Queen Elizabeth II, then still a Princess. Hagop also did a lot of
voluntary work for the School for the Blind.
He met and married his wife, Vanouhi Cherchian in 1957 and when the
troubles in Cyprus between the Greeks and the Turks escalated in 1964 they
moved to England with their daughter Tania and his parents. He continued to
work with the FBIS at the BBC Monitoring Station in Caversham. Hagop was there
until he took early retirement at the age of 61 and enjoyed travelling all over
the world with his wife, Vanouhi.
Hagop lived a long and happy life. He was a great family man and
always put his family first. Hagop was man with depth of character who exuded
strength in a calm, quiet way. He was firm in his principles and very
meticulous, paying great attention to detail.
A close friend of Hagop from Cyprus, on hearing the sad news said, "We
are all the poorer for his leaving today."
