Tommy you came into my life when I was ten years old and you married my sister Sheena. When I was 25 I moved to London and think that's when I got to know you and Sheena as friends rather than family. Oh my goodness we had some fun times, you introduced me to pubs in London I would never have found on my own! I was always welcome at your home for weekends and Christmas, I am remembering Cocktails good and bad......We have all slowed down over the years but you always had so much to talk about and there was always something to learn from you. You have left us all far too early and we will miss you so much. Rest in Peace.

He was my North, my South, my East my West. My working week and my Sunday rest. My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song. I thought that love would last forever, I was wrong. ( W.H. Auden )

Although I haven't seen Tommy for a long time I have fond memories of our time in Carlisle and Exeter. In fact he had a strong influence in helping me gain a place at Exeter College of Art. He won't be forgotten.

As a student of Tommy's from 1989-90, I've been reflecting on the significant impact he's had on my professional life. My foundation interview included an hour drawing wooden stools (imagine if this happened now). Tommy remembered the buttons I'd made when he offered me my place back after I'd declined it due to homelessness. He was a hard taskmaster & expected us to be as committed to work as he was. Some of his teaching practices would not be acceptable today. In one crit he took a student's painting, scrubbed it down in the sink, & declared it looked much better. Another time the life model didn't show, we were left drawing sticks in space for days. Each time we returned from break the sticks had been moved & we had to start again by rubbing our drawings out! But mostly, I remember his kindness, which was instinctive. He knew exactly how to help me when I struggled supporting myself & almost dropped out. Completing foundation undoubtedly changed the course of my life for the better
