Sadly I only knew Andrew for the last few years of his life through my involvement with Reading Amateur Regatta. Andrew was kind, softly spoken and made everyone feel comfortable. His smile was infectious and his sense of humour lovely. Andrew will be fondly remembered and sorely missed. Best wishes to all his family left behind.

Andrew was a major contributor to the advancement of dairy products, particularly aiding small-scale ice-cream makers through his courses, and in advancing the successful development of the Institute of Food Science and Technology, leading to its recent award of the royal charter.

In memory of a good family friend, who will be missed by us all. Our fathers met just after WW II and our families have known each other ever since - now on the fourth generation. Andrew has always been drawn to water so this is a good choice.

We once suggested to Andrew that we would be happy to help a little with Reading Amateur Regatta. Roll forward a couple of years and both of us were firmly in place on the committee. Andrew had an amazing ability to get the best out of people, to allow people to show what they could do, confident in the knowledge that he would take up the slack if it proved too much. He was a mentor to most of us on the RAR committee. There was not a Reading Amateur Regatta committee role that he had not done at some point over the 40+ years that he was involved. If you stood back, you saw the same level of support for other organisations such as RUBC Head and TVP Regatta. It always amazed us where he got the energy from and that it did not diminish even when he knew he was ill. The river and rowing community will miss that tireless enthusiasm, but most of all we have lost a dear friend. Nick and Ania Haskins
