If you are lucky in life you have a teacher who is a great mentor and inspiration, Jonathan was that for me. I was so lucky to retrain as a botanist at Reading in the same year as Jonathan started teaching the Plant Diversity MSc. I don't have to tell anyone, who met or was taught by Jonathan, how passionate he was about plants and communicating their wonders to everyone and anyone. I will never forget the amazing field trips with Jonathan making the learning so easy and fun. I still have paper packets of bryophytes and lichens and herbarium sheets, I made during the course, of Jonathan's beloved Poaceae with his handwritten comments regarding the quality of the 'material', both good and bad! I was privileged to have Jonathan as my supervisor for the MSc project at a site he had set up twenty years before at the old Wye college in Kent. I now work as a botanist and try and teach others in my own small way and this is in no small part due to the inspirational Dr M. Never forgotten
